Salt aerosol deposits chlorides on every outdoor surface near the coast. Chlorides break down passive oxide layers on steel and aluminum, driving pitting and crevice corrosion; in reinforced concrete, chloride ingress corrodes rebar, which expands and spalls the concrete around it.
